In a previous life, Mount Famine were the masters of the UK ‘almost ran’ toilet circuit. Years were spent in the backs of transit vans driving to shows, playing to half empty sticky pubs and clubs and then coming home again.

In 2019, Martin Stanier and Steve ‘Tree’ Bailey started writing together on piano and drums finding a shared love of The Cure, Manic Street Preachers, Suede, Elbow and Radiohead. Gone were the days of power chords and breaking down in vans at 3am on the M1 and instead was a desire to do exactly what they wanted, whether anyone cared or not.

Five singles later with support from Radio X and BBC Introducing, they did what any self-respecting artists would do, and decided to try harder. Everyone loves a life affirming, hook laden, fist pumping indie rock song, right?? But that’s not the only thing you want to hear.. is it? You want songs that take you by the hand, pick you up and resonate loudly with your own feelings and experiences?

Since their last single in 2022, Mark Simpson who played bass on Distance and Offcuts has joined permanently along with Andy Ball on guitar. In Andy’s former life, he’d crept the boards as part of one of the UK’s most established tribute acts and Mark is a long term friend of Tree. Songs have become more ambitious and sounds are widened; Mount Famine have become a fiercely independent emotive, soaring and string laden four piece. They make the music that they wish their favourite bands still did; like the internet never happened..
